The Hong Kong Club Foundation

The Hong Kong Club Foundation

General
The Hong Kong Club Foundation (the Foundation) was founded by The Hong Kong Club (the Club) in 2015 with the aim of helping to provide money and member expertise for unmet needs in Hong Kong.

The Foundation supports a wide range of Hong Kong Non-Government Organizations (NGOs).

The Foundation primarily funds smaller NGOs, often younger and more innovative ones. We look for energetic and mission-driven founders with strong vision.

Where possible, we pair volunteer Club members with our grantees in order to develop the grantees’ organizational strengths.

We work with other philanthropic organizations through our membership of The Hong Kong Foundations Exchange.

Funding
We are funded through allocations from the Club, which may allocate up to ten percent of the Club’s annual surplus after tax to the Foundation (or up to HK$7.5 million if the Club makes a loss in any year), as well as contributions and bequests from Club members.

Structure and governance of the Foundation
The Foundation is a company limited by guarantee.  Its full name is The Hong Kong Club Foundation Limited.  The Club is the sole member of the Foundation.

The Foundation is a charitable institution and is exempt from tax under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance.

The Foundation’s governing body is its board.  The names of the current directors are set out in the section of this website headed “Directors of the Foundation”.

Reason for the establishment of the Foundation
The Hong Kong Club has been a part of Hong Kong life for over 175 years. Our members have contributed to and benefitted from Hong Kong’s success.  The Foundation continues in this tradition. The Foundation gives new meaning to the Club’s motto “Commune Bonum” – The Common Good.

Guiding principles
The Foundation makes donations to charities which are non-political, have clear identities, focus on Hong Kong, have values which are consistent with those of the Club, are open to involvement by Club members and are sources of pride to Club members.

The Foundation’s purpose is to support, nurture and promote non-profit making NGOs which address social needs in Hong Kong.  We do so by funding pilot projects, new services and long-term strategic initiatives which fill service gaps and address specific social needs. Our funding may cover recurrent, programme or, exceptionally, capital costs.

Focus areas
We focus on the elderly, marginalised youth and ethnic minorities.  We look for unmet needs in these focus areas.  In doing so, we visit a large number of NGOs and consult subject matter experts.
